Earl Science Program: first SRT call for proposal

The Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) is progressing significantly both in its commissioning for the first set of observing modes and the development of the Operations procedures. At the current stage the telescope can start the scientific production with users expert of the SRT able to effectively address the little hiccups typical of any new facility on its way to open to Operations.

To such an aim it has been decided to carry out an Early Science Program with a small number of large projects (a few hundreds hours) to be conducted in the first half of 2016 before to start with calls open to the astronomical community at large. The goal is two-fold: to start the scientific production with projects of high scientific profile able to return significant results and give visibility to the telescope and the science it can deliver; to test the system with a heavy use and improve the reliability of the Operations fixing the bugs that only a intensive use can raise up.

The SRT Early Science Program (ESP) selected by this call will be conducted in the period 1 February to 31 May 2016. It is anticipated that an extension up to 31 July 2016 might be possible, depending on when planned maintenance activity will start.
