Summer School in Radio Astronomy
The first Summer School in Radio Astronomy starts in Sardinia on Sunday August 31: "The cosmic radio - Discovering radio telescopes and the invisible universe", a unique opportunity to experience the world of radio astronomy first hand.
The school, taking place at the Observatory of Cagliari's new headquarters in Selargius and at the Sardinia Radio Telescope (San Basilio), will officially start on Monday September 1 and conclude on SaturdaySeptember 6, 2014.
24 students, half from Sardinia and half from Lombardia (who won a spot in the school thanks to a competition open to all students starting in september their fifth year of secondary school), will be involved all week in theoretical lessons and practical exercises (in laboratory and at SRT), which will help them master the bases of radioastronomy, the measurement of microwave antennae's properties, the computation of antenna parameters and the measurement of radio interferences.
The activities and lessons will be led by professional physicists and astrophysicists working for the University of Milan and INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari. The school's program is available at this link.
The school originated within a project of scientific collaboration between the Department of Physics at the Università degli Studi di Milano and INAF -Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari (OAC), named "Sviluppo di Tecnologie avanzate nel radio e nelle microonde" (Development of advanced Technologies in the radio and microwave regimes) and financed within the context of the collaboration agreement for scientific research and technological innovation between the Sardinia and the Lombardia regions.
The school, organized by the Sterrenlab company with the scientific and logistical collaboration of the two institutes involved, is also sponsored by three schools that are official partners of the initiative: the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Giua di Cagliari, the I.T.S. Salvador Allende and the Fondazione Sacro Cuore di Milano. The school has also obtained the patronage of the Società Italiana di Astronomia (SAIT).
